(28-29 April 2025, Makati, PH) The Philippines, led by Secretary for Foreign Affairs Enrique A. Manalo, proudly hosted the High-Level Conference of Middle-Income Countries (MICs) from 28 to 29 April 2025 at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel. With the theme “Breaking New Grounds: Towards a Strategic Plan of Action for Middle-Income Countries”, the conference focused on key challenges and opportunities faced by MICs today, highlighting the significance of empowerment, inclusion, and partnerships in the development agenda.
Indonesia, headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir, participated in the event, encouraging the strengthening of solidarity and trade among MICs. He called for three strategic steps towards realizing goals of MICs: building a concrete collaboration platform through South-South Cooperation, reforming of the multilateral system, and increasing intra-MIC trade.
Since its commencement in 2007, the Conference has been hosted by other MICs in Africa, Central America, and Eastern Europe. This year’s eighth edition of the conference was historic as it was hosted in the Asia Pacific region for the first time, with the Philippines seeking to bring fresh perspectives to the discussion on MICs.
