(19 March 2025, Jakarta) – The Philippine Embassy in Jakarta, in partnership with the Indonesia International Institute for Life Sciences (i3L) and in cooperation with EdukSine, held a film screening of “Liway,” a multi-awarded Filipino independent film directed by Kip Oebanda. It features the true story of a young mother who uses storytelling to protect her child from the realities of growing up in prison and the difficult life she endured.

The event was attended by members of the Filipino community and the diplomatic corps, as well as i3L students and officials. During the brief open forum after the screening, there was an emotional response from the audience due to the film’s dramatic storyline, political theme, and the lead character’s struggles as a mother, wife and a woman amidst societal challenges.

Charge d’Affaires Gonaranao B. Musor acknowledged with appreciation the positive reaction of the audience from the film. “Liway’s journey is just a microcosm of the struggles women face, regardless of their status in life or the political milieu they live in. We hope that at the end of this event, people will have something to think about in terms of how we value the role of women in our lives and the extra challenges they face,” CDA Musor added.

The film screening is in line with the Embassy’s celebration of the Philippine National Women’s Month, with the theme “Babae sa Lahat ng Sektor, Aangat ang Bukas sa Bagong Pilipinas.” Through this event, the Philippine Embassy joined the Philippine government and the international community in emphasizing the need for inclusive progress and ensuring that no woman is left behind in the journey toward equal opportunities and empowerment.
