(19 August 2024, Jakarta) - In celebration of this year’s 75th anniversary of Philippines-Indonesia diplomatic relations, the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta in collaboration with the Women International Club (WIC) of Jakarta organized the event entitled, “WOMEN IN DIPLOMACY: An Afternoon with Former Secretary of Foreign Affairs Delia Domingo Albert” on 19 August 2024 at the Balay, the Official Residence in Jakarta.
The event was attended by women ambassadors namely, Ambassador Stella Bezirtzoglou of Greece, Ambassador Dagmar González Grau of Cuba and Ambassador Cristina González of Uruguay, Ms. Dwi Yuliawati Faiz of UN Women Indonesia; Ms. Deborah Iskandar of ISA Gallery; Ms. Lina Gan of Indonesia Design; and officers and members of WIC Jakarta (WIC) headed by its President Nazneen Khubchandani, and Vice President Mary Anne Widjaja; and representatives of the media (TFC News and Business Lounge Journal).
In her remarks, Ambassador Gina A. Jamoralin underscored the importance of celebrating the remarkable achievements of women in the diplomatic arena. This event also served as a platform to gain invaluable insights on the ways in which diverse perspectives can enrich diplomatic efforts and foster a more inclusive global dialogue. Ambassador Jamoralin also highlighted some of the Filipino and Indonesian women at the forefront of diplomacy, such as the guest of honor, Ambassador Delia Domingo Albert, who became the first woman career diplomat to become Secretary of Foreign Affairs in Asia and the first woman President of the Philippines, President Corazon Aquino.
Ambassador Albert discussed the crucial role of women in diplomacy in driving sustainable development and global peace. She mentioned that the ASEAN region has seen a rise in female national leaders, sixteen (16) to date and women diplomats who have been instrumental in advocating for policies related to gender equality, climate change, and regional security. These women in the Philippines foreign service were featured in her book “Women in Diplomacy.” Ambassador Albert also recalled the early years of her career in the foreign service and the challenges that go with it as a woman. She hopes that the contributions of women diplomats will continue to be recognized and valued, including the possibility that a woman will take the helm of ASEAN as Secretary General.
