(10 January 2023, Manila) - President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. met with Indonesian President Joko Widodo in Malacañang Palace on 10 January 2024 for a bilateral meeting to reaffirm their commitment to deepening and expanding ties as the two countries will celebrate the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic ties on 24 November 2024.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and President Joko Widodo witnessed the presentation of the signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Cooperation in the Field of Energy. The MOU aims to foster and enhance cooperative activities in the field of energy for the mutual benefit of the Participants within the framework of the ASEAN Energy Cooperation and the spirit of ASEAN cooperation friendship.

The MOU presentation was followed by the Leaders’ Statement of President Marcos Jr. and President Widodo respectively.

During their bilateral meeting, President Marcos Jr. conveyed his gratitude to the strong leadership of President Widodo for maintaining and flourishing the partnership between the two nations, highlighting that Indonesia continues to be one of the Philippines’ closest friends and regional partners.  Likewise, President Widodo also expressed his appreciation and commitment to further enhance the relations between the two countries, particularly in strengthening areas of political, security and economic partnership, and the strengthening of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) unity.

Following the bilateral meeting, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. hosted a state luncheon for President Joko Widodo at the Kalayaan Hall in Malacañang Palace.

In his toast remarks, President Marcos Jr. highlighted that the Philippines and Indonesia are not only neighbors, but are also brothers and sisters sharing a longstanding history, a vibrant culture, and common aspirations for peace and prosperity for our people and in the future.

President Widodo offered a toast to the friendship and prosperity of Filipinos and Indonesians and to celebrate the 75 years of diplomatic relations between Philippines and Indonesia. END
